Highlight: Underscores
By the name of this blog and the gif of god herself at the top your screen it's pretty clear who my favorite artist is. April Harper Grey is a 26 year old bay area born producer / singer songwriter that makes like the most enjoyable music EVERR. If U dont already know her I would highly recommend U check out her album from earleir this year aptly titled, U. It's a very pop centric hyperpop record with surprisingly simple yet genius production spanning 9 tracks and 34 minutes. Her 2nd album Wallsocket is also amazing and dives more into a indie rock ish sound with her signature hyperpop production ranging from songs that will get stuck in your head FOREVER like Locals (girls like us) with gabby start, the hook of arms, body, legs, flesh, skin, bone, sinew, good luck! getting trapped in my brain once a day AT LEAST, to songs like Geez Louise! with henhouse taking you on a 7 minute journey through a whole mess of genres that shouldn't work together but not only do they but they culminate into one of my all time favorite songs. Anyways I would highly HIGHLYY recommend U give her a listen if you somehow haven't already.
Highlight: Olivia O.
The most slept on indie girl out there, Olivia O. is a singer/songwriter who is an extremely talented guitarist and vocalist who pushes the boundaires of what bedroom indie can be. With a collaboration list featuing the likes of Liam McCay (sign crushes motorist, dead calm, take care, boyhood, etc.), Otto Benson (memo boy), Computerwife, sweet93, and more, her music incorporates vocal layering techniques pioneered by Linda Perhacs (If you dont recognize this name stop what you are doing and listen to Chimacum Rain) taking 4-5 minutes at her live shows just to get an elaborate background ambiance for her songs going before performing that you can hear in her Audiotree session that recently came out with the re-recording of Hickory being her equivilant of Mitski's Class of 2013 Audiotree featuing an extremely intense ending for what originally was a very quiet song. Olivia's sophmore album No Bones, Sickly Sweet is one of my all time favorites with songs like One Hit Wonder, Rejection, Roof Song (literally so insane please please peep), and kmb being some of my absolute favorites, this albums runs a total of 1hr 12m delivering the most unsettlingly comforting feeling I could imagine. Olivia has a lot of influence from post punk and gothic rock aside from just her indie roots which makes for a very eerie and creepy feeling in many of her songs paired with her angelic voice that culminates in what I can only begin to describe as an akward yet healing blanket being placed on you. Ive been lucky enough to catch her live 3 times now (twice solo and once with her band Lowertown who I used to not really like but on their recent record Ugly Duckling Union I finally had click for me) and I will continue to catch her every chance I get.
